I’m Pete - a qualified psychotherapeutic counsellor and a member of the professional counselling body, BACP. I offer in-person counselling and psychotherapy sessions in Summertown, Oxford. Whatever it is that has you troubled, I can support you to understand yourself and your situation better, to identify life patterns and navigate your way through your current challenges. Throughout the process, I aim to be warm, welcoming, empathetic and curious about your life and experiences.
The issues that bring us to counselling are different for us all. It might be that you’re feeling anxious or depressed, are dealing with family or relationship difficulties, or are not feeling like your ‘old self’ and can’t quite figure out why. Counselling can help at such times by providing you with space to talk through - in a warm and non-judgemental environment - your full range of your thoughts and feelings about your experiences.
In our sessions together, I’ll support you to understand and make meaning of your life and experiences, as well as to deal with the issues that have you troubled. Along the way, new aspects of your thoughts and feelings will often emerge, while others may fade into the background, and these shifts can help you navigate your way through difficult times.
I came to counselling work later in life, having experienced my own period of psychological adversity in which I benefited hugely from working with a therapist. I began retraining in 2020 and since then have gained experience of providing short- and long-term therapy at various community counselling organisations and with the NHS, alongside my private practice in Oxford.
I hold a diploma in humanistic psychotherapeutic counselling from the specialist Metanoia Institute in London. I am also enrolled in a humanistic psychotherapy MSc programme and am a trainee member of psychotherapy body, UKCP. Prior to retraining, I worked in human rights and development for higher education institutes, not-for-profits and international donor agencies. I have spent some time living abroad, mainly in Latin America and continental Europe, but also in Africa.
You can use your counselling sessions to talk about anything you wish, but here are a few examples of the issues I've supported clients with previously:
Feelings of stress or anxiety
Panic attacks
Relationship problems
Grief, loss or bereavement
Trauma and post-traumatic stress
Abuse
Depression or joylessness
Problems with confidence or self-esteem
Anger management
Navigating major life transitions
Difficulties at work or in retirement
Problems with family or school life
I offer both short and long-term therapy, with 50-minute sessions held once weekly. The cost per session is £65 and I accept payments in cash or via bank transfer.
Prior to agreeing to work together, we will usually have an introductory video call of around 15 minutes' duration to see what you'd like to cover in therapy and discuss availability etc. There is no charge for the introductory call -- please do send me a message to book one in soon.
Feel free to contact me if you have any questions about how counselling works, or to arrange an initial appointment. This enables us to discuss the reasons you are thinking of coming to counselling, whether it could be helpful for you and whether I am the right therapist to help.
All enquires are usually answered within 24 hours, and all contact is strictly confidential and uses secure phone and email services.
